On Writing: Snip … Snip … Snip

by Belle on June 1, 2009

Today’s word count: 1012 words.

Actually, it’s probably a little bit more. After I finished up the scene I was working on, I went back to a previous scene, the first of several that will have to be revised now that I know my character isn’t as old or as established as I had thought she was. Not to mention the fact that she lives in a totally different locale, and I had been hell-bent on making her former locale a character in the story.

No wonder it wasn’t working.

So I snipped – but I didn’t toss. I’m putting all the old scenes in a separate file, just in case I can salvage some of the writing later. And I only snipped away the bits that didn’t fit. There were still parts that did fit, and I filled the gaps with more words that fit, so now I’ve got the start of a coherent whole for that scene.

It’s going. It’s working. I’m on track, motivated – dare I say the word? Disciplined. Bum glue – that really is what makes the difference, isn’t it?

I snip and save too. How can we discard our lovelies when there’s still life in them? I’ve always been a huge recycler.

Thanks, Meghan. I’m just so glad I finally finished getting the new template up – I’ve been procrastinating on this for weeks!

Fran, I like that idea! Recycling our words – yes, that is exactly what I’m doing.
