On Writing: Setting Priorities

by Belle on June 7, 2009

Today’s word count: 975 words

NANTUCKET total to date: 32,789 words

It’s another late night, and I’m starting to see that I’m going to have to do a bit more than just keep going with this writing goal. I’ve got to start shifting my to-do list around, so that the writing doesn’t always end up being the last thing I do. I’ve had too many of these 1:00 to 3:00 a.m. nights lately. When you’ve got a six-year-old, late nights just don’t work very well.

So tonight I stopped working on my two Giveaways Lists that I post on Sundays before they were finished. I saved them as drafts, and will finish them up tomorrow (or rather, later today, after I’ve slept!). I knew if I didn’t wrap things up for the night, I wouldn’t get time to write my 1000 words. As it was, it’s so late, and when I finished the scene I was working on, I only had 975 words, but it just isn’t possible to start on the next scene, since it’s almost 3 in the morning right now.

The writing’s been going well. Now I just have to be more committed and make it even more of a priority. So let’s see if I can’t get these daily On Writing posts up a lot sooner than I have been – the earlier I post these, the earlier I’ve gotten to my writing. Meaning, the more of a priority I’ll be making the writing. I’m ready for this next baby step.

You are doing great, Belle! I need to make writing more of a priority, too. I mean, I have all this time and I am still not getting it done. I get cold feet or something. I sit down to write and I allow myself to be distracted into a million other projects. I was going to write one day and ended up cleaning my mirror. I mean, who does that?

I like your posts on writing. They are great.

That is a very good idea Belle. The giveaways will still be there! I’m doing my half hour first thing in the morning

I so admire your writing discipline and enjoy reading your posts on this writing process. I may not have time to read too many blogs while away at school, but yours will definitely be at the top of my list. I learn so much from you as a writer, and I have a feeling I will use your blog as inspiration for the next 6 weeks.

Rebecca, I’ve definitely done that before – sat down to write and ended up cleaning something. And I hate to clean! Blogging about my writing progress has probably been the best motivator for me. I find myself thinking, if I don’t do this, I’m going to have to write a post that says, I didn’t do it … I don’t want to write a post that says that! (although I have – one so far …)

Nicole, I would love to be able to do my half hour first thing in the morning but I am so not a morning person. I’m going to try for early evening, right after Dylan goes to bed but before I tackle anything else. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Beth, it’s amazing what going public with a goal can do …!

Molly, thank you! I am so glad you’re enjoying these posts. You remember the angst I had about whether I should even be blogging about writing rather than just books.
