My Morning Walk Productivity Dilemma

I hate to admit it, because I love my morning walks, but I’m having a productivity dilemma because of them.

I’ve discovered that early mornings are really good for both my creativity and my productivity. While I’m sitting there with my coffee, I’ve been getting so many ideas I have to keep my idea journal at hand. And a lot of the ideas I get make me want to go, go, go—get things done, tick things off the to-do list. That whole rah rah rah I’m productive thing that, frankly, I hardly ever felt until recently when I started getting up early to go for my walks.

So the problem? I finish up my coffee, and go for my walk. I have a great time while walking, and sometimes I even stop somewhere for fifteen minutes or so and get some meditation in. But when I get back, that whole productive feeling is gone. Pufffft. Nowhere in sight.

I figure there are a couple of solutions:

1. I should spend the first couple of hours after waking up sitting at my desk and writing and working, and then go for my walk.

2. I can try taking my walk at night instead.

The problem with solution #1 is, now that it’s summer, things start getting hot around nine o’clock, and I really really really don’t like walking outside when it’s hot.

The problem with solution #2 is I can have all the best intentions of walking later in the day, but the way things work around here is, stuff (as in the general “stuff” of life) always comes up and before I know it, it’s pretty late and I need to be heading to bed, not going out for an hour-long walk.

Sadly, there’s really only one solution, if I want to continue my morning walks and also make use of this newly found productive/creative time in the mornings.

I have to get up even earlier than I have been getting up. Somewhere in the vicinity of 6:00 a.m., which to me seems like quite an ungodly time of day. But if I can manage to do that, I can actually write/work for two whole hours, while also leisurely drinking my coffee, and still be out and about for my walk before it gets too hot.

Not sure if I can do it, though. But I’ll definitely give it a try!

    This is an ongoing problem for me. If I really really want to make sure something happens, it needs to be first thing in the morning. It’s my best time (after I’m awake, at least), for almost anything and everything. But really only one thing fits there. Hope your new plan is a good and functional one for you!

    Good luck! I’ve been interested in watching as you try to shift your getting up and going down time. I think I’ve mentioned that I’ve always been an early bird. Do you think this stuff is just habit or are we born that way? LOL

    I did a pretty good job of getting out for walks in the evening during the winter. Now that it’s summer, I’m more likely to spend the evening relaxing. Weird. I haven’t made much of a dent on developing a better morning routine, but your posts always inspire me to try!

    Do you already wake up really early? I’m currently dealing with insomnia, so I get up as early as 2 a.m. or as late as 8 a.m. I’m an early riser, so doing things in the morning is one of the few guarantees that I’ll get something accomplish. Good luck and tell us if it works out.

    Good luck! I can sympathize with the planning to walk later in the day and then everything getting in the way dilemma-that’s been the story of my life for the past week! Plus in the summer it doesn’t really cool down until dark anyway, and who wants to walk in the dark?

    I need more hours in my early morning time, too. I want to write/journal in the quiet with a cup of coffee, water the garden, walk the dogs 2-3 miles and somehow I just can’t get it all in before 10 am. WHY not? I dunno…

    What if you went for your walk first, and then sat down with your coffee to do work? It would still be nice and cool for walking outside, and you wouldn’t have to interrupt your workflow once you started. (I don’t know if you need to have your coffee before anything else happens in your day, or if your early morning creative burst still wouldn’t be as productive after walking, but it’s a thought!)

    I walk after work because I have the same problem. I’m always so productive in the morning. If I walk then, then the day is totally shot.

    I hear what you are saying. I like using my morning time to do stuff around the house – I actually have the desire to do things then. But then I have to go to work and all that inspiration has gone out the window.

    This is an issue for me as well. I get up about 7:30 am and grab some breakfast and then take the dog for his walk. We get home, I feed him, and then the only thing I feel like doing is sitting down with another cup of coffee and reading or something like that. I think part of the issue is the heat as you mentioned. It’s so hot and walking in it only makes me hotter and it doesn’t make Sam happy either. Sadly the only solution I’ve come up with is getting up earlier and walking earlier which both Sam and me aren’t going to like. It’s a dilemma. lol. Hope your new morning routine will be successful!

      My morning routine has been a big fail this week, Darlene. I’ve been slipping back into my night owl habits. (So, for example, it’s 1:54 a.m. and I’m still up …!)

    I can totally relate to this on so many levels! In the past, I have been most productive in the evenings, but things have completely turned upside down in the last few months. I’ve been pretty productive in the mornings. I’ve been wanting to spend more time working out in the morning too while I’m at it because it just doesn’t always happen in the evenings. How does everything seem to be going this week?!?

      I seem to have fallen back into my night owl habits this past week–and it’s funny, but I don’t feel nearly as productive when I don’t get up early in the morning!
