Chinese Dragon Emperor, Part 2 (Or, Our Summer Vacation Video)
Several of you have mentioned you would like to see more of our summer vacation photos (well, okay, two people vaguely said something about this in passing). We took 100s of photos while on holidays, most of which feature much the same elements: sand, surf and blue skies. So I thought it would be far more fun to show you “our summer vacation video”. Technically, I can call it “our summer vacation video” because my daughter Hayley and her friend Heather filmed it on location at the beautiful oceanfront cottage in Nova Scotia where we stayed during our holidays.
Trust me, this is a lot more interesting than any video Ward or I would have taken: it’s got a plot, some funny bits and a fight scene at the end. What more could one ask for? And a bonus: you can even see the Atlantic Ocean in the background. Enjoy!

For the scenes they were both in, they set up the camcorder on a tripod (which, unfortunately, we left at the cottage!). Since they’re usually short on actors, they’ve gotten quite used to filming themselves that way. I can’t imagine the patience it takes, though, to keep setting the camcorder up to get all the different angles! For the scenes only one of them was in, the other would shoot the footage.

I love this. What a great way to spend summer vacation. Love the fight scenes and the container moving. The special effects were great too.

Thanks, everyone! The two of them had a good time scripting everything and doing the filming, and I was just plain happy they were enjoying themselves. That’s one thing I’m really glad I did – give Hayley a camcorder for her birthday when she was nine. I remember wondering to myself, is this kind of overboard, for a nine-year-old? And it turns out, filmmaking is definitely her calling in life!
