“The Title Made Me Do It!” (Title Finds #1)

by Belle on May 28, 2009

Does this ever happen to you? You’re checking out different book and writing sites, and suddenly, a book title leaps out at you. You think to yourself, “that is hilarious!” or “what an interesting title!” (or possibly “WTF???”, depending on the title and whether your little ones are nearby), and while you might not want to add the title to your wish list, you’re definitely curious. And chances are, you remember the title, at least for a day or two.

This happens to me all the time, so I decided to start a collection of them. Here are some recent titles that jumped out at me:

Mummy Said the F-Word, by Fiona Gibson. It’s self-explanatory, I think, why this one drew my attention. I couldn’t find it at Amazon.com – it looks like it’s only available at Amazon.co.uk.  (Via review at Trashionista)

If I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where's My PrinceIf I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where’s My Prince?, by Melissa Kantor. I have this thing about Cinderella themes – I love them. I don’t know why, exactly, but you can be sure any suggestion of a modern-day Cinderella will have me scribbling down the title on my list of books to keep an eye out for. Not quite my wish list, but almost. (Via review at The Compulsive Reader)

The Marriage Bureau for Rich PeopleThe Marriage Bureau for Rich People, by Farahad Zama. I am actually adding this title to my wish list. Caribousmom, where I discovered this book, says, “this book has been described as ‘Alexander McCall Smith meets Jane Austen’ in a contemporary Indian marriage bureau.” She received this through a Shelf Awareness offer – I’m kicking myself for not catching that particular issue!

The Physick Book of Deliverance DaneThe Physick Book of Deliverance Dane, by Katherine Howe. You just know from this title that this book is going to be very mysterious and maybe even a little magical. Fyrefly Books has a great review of this book (it’s where I discovered it), and I’m hovering on the brink of putting this one on my wish list.

In God We Trust: All Others Pay CashIn God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash, by Jean Shepherd. What a fun title! I discovered this one at Framed and Booked, who found it reminded her of Bill Bryson’s memoir, The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid, which is currently in my TBR. It sounds absolutely hilarious, so this is another title that’s making it onto my wish list.

The Ramen King and I: How the Inventor of Instant Noodles Fixed My Love Life The Ramen King and I: How the Inventor of Instant Noodles Fixed My Love Life , by Andy Raskin. Another memoir that makes it to my wish list, The Ramen King and I includes lots of stuff about Japanese food, which is more than enough to get it to the wish list in the first place. The title’s the icing on the cake. (Via Editorial Ass)

Spylets are ForeverSpylets are Forever, by Jill Marshall. Just to say, a title doesn’t have to be long to tickle my fancy. Spylets are Forever is the last book in the Jane Blonde series, and I’m happy to say this because I’ve never read any of the Jane Blonde books before, which means I have quite a load of fun awaiting me. I found this one via this review at Chicklish.

Encyclopedia of an Ordinary LifeEncyclopedia of an Ordinary Life, by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. This title didn’t just grab me – it’s made it into my shopping cart at Chapters, as I’m getting ready for a two week holiday on the shores of Nova Scotia early in July. Carrie at Books and Movies, where I discovered this, describes it as “Part personal scrapbook, part journal, this alphabetically arranged memoir is quirky, funny, and sarcastic – and a great read”, and once I saw the sample pages at Amazon I was truly hooked.

Never Have Your Dog Stuffed: And Other Things I've LearnedNever Have Your Dog Stuffed: And Other Things I’ve Learned, by Alan Alda. I came across this from the same list of memoirs at Books and Movies, and it’s one I might end up putting on my wish list, especially since I seem to be on a memoir streak right now. I really do like funny long titles that a lot of memoirs seem to sport.

I'm Fine with God...It's Christians I Can't Stand: Getting Past the Religious Garbage in the Search for Spiritual TruthI’m Fine with God…It’s Christians I Can’t Stand: Getting Past the Religious Garbage in the Search for Spiritual Truth, by Bruce Bickel and Stan Jantz. Now this is definitely a title that grabs attention, don’t you think? It sounds rather controversial, but Rebecca, who has written a really great review of the book at I’m Lost in Books, notes that it is written for Christians by Christians. It definitely sounds like an interesting read if you like books about religion or spirituality.

So these are my Title Finds for the week. Have you come across any titles that grabbed your attention this week? I’d love to hear about them!

I got Hollywood Car Wash from the library b/c of the title. The book is not so great, but it’s a neat title.

I never fail to get the title mixed up for the The Physick Book. I think I kept calling it Dane Deliverance for awhile.

The book “In God We Trust…All Others Pay Cash” was made into the movie “A Christmas Story”. We watch the movie every year. It is hilarious.

I love these titles and will admit I’ve bought books just because I loved the title before. Of course, I’m coming up completely blank trying to come up with them right now though. LOL!

They all have great titles, but I especially like the first one. :) Thanks for the links, too.

What a great idea for a feature — the title is usually what grabs me, too; though I can’t think of anything off-hand right now that I’ve picked up solely because of the title. :)

This is great! Quirky titles never fail to catch my attention, and you’ve come across some cool ones. The only one from the list that I’ve read is Encyclopedia Of An Ordinary Life – I really enjoyed this book and the author has a fab website.

I must seriously be losing it, Belle. This is the second post I have come across tonight where you mentioned some book from my blog and I never even realized it. It must have been all the craziness of May with my surgery and my flare-up. At least that’s what I am blaming it on. :) Thanks for the lovely words about my reviews. You rock. :)
